Active Transport

The carrying ("port") of molecules across ("trans") a cell membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of lower concentration.

The ladder has a role very similar to the role of active transport. Just as in active transport, a ladder moves a person (a molecule in active transport) from a lower region to a higher region. Often in active transport, the molecule is moving against the gradient to get to the higher concentration. When a person climbs a ladder they are moving against the force of gravity, which is similar to moving against a gradient in active transport.
