A period in a fossil record in which a species undergoes little or no change, interrupted by short periods of sudden change.A species of kangaroo undergoes a period of punctuated equilibrium. For 5 years, there is very little change in the physical and genetic structure of the kangaroo. However, over the next 3 years the climate becomes colder, therefore the kangaroo adapts to obtain another layer of fur. Then for the next 7 years the kangaroo experiences no more major adaptations.
